Suits Plus has a history in retail that can be traced back to 1947 when Chief Executive Alan Blumenthal’s father Harold left the army and setup Barnes Furnishings. In the 1950’s Harold spotted an opportunity to sell tailor made suits on instalment in Birmingham. By the 1960’s Harold had a group of shops serving Birmingham and its main suburbs, and the brand Nelson House was the number one choice for the fashion conscious young man.
In 1973, at the age of 14, Alan gets his first taste of the clothing industry and in 1977 he starts work on a summer job that is still running today. In the 1980’s Alan and his team lead the Birmingham fashion trade with the Alive retail brand and pioneer the multibuy concept. At the end of the decade the shops are now selling mainly suits and Suits Plus is born. The concept of multibuy is applied to clear oddment suits and a raging success leads Alan and his team to persue a ‘two suits for £100’ sales strategy that puts Suits Plus firmly on the map.
Suits Plus expands throughout the UK and the multibuy concept takes off
In the 1990’s Suits Plus expands throughout the UK and a corporate look and feel is rolled out across all the stores. In a twelve month period the company opens eight new stores, four of them within a three month timeframe. The multibuy is extended to encompass shirts with quality shirts being sold at ‘two for a tenner’, this exceeds all expectations and as a result a high end package promotion is instituted ‘2 suits, 2 shirts, 2 ties, and 2 suit covers for £160’. The multibuy concept truly takes off.
In the late 1990’s the company opens a new Head Office and Warehousing complex to support it’s nationwide chain of stores.
Today the company is at the forefront of good quality reasonable cost clothing sales and the multibuy is at the centre of the business’s success. Alan and his team look forward to continued growth whilst providing the best of service.
